Holsten’s Brookdale Confectionary

Although Holsten’s has been around for three decades, I’ll admit the first time I ever heard of the homemade ice cream and candy shop was after the series finale of the HBO hit-series, The Sopranos.

Soon after the finale aired in 2007, I, like dozens of other crazed Jersey fans headed over to Bloomfield to sit in the same booth that the Soprano family did and to order french fries and onion rings, just like Tony.

It was when dessert came that I realized why Holsten’s was in business for so long.  Let me set the record straight, that I am no stranger to ice cream or dessert. I’ve had my fair share of frozen goodness almost everywhere I go. But, when I ordered the Duster Sundae, a special sundae made of your choice of ice cream, chocolate syrup, whipped cream, and then covered in malt powder; I officially had a new favorite dessert.

The homemade ice cream is one of a kind and, with reasonable prices the portions are truly generous. But this Awesome NJ spot has more to offer than delicious ice cream.  The old fashion atmosphere is one of a kind with wood paneling walls and stools at the counter if you’re not in the mood to sit in a booth.

Holsten’s homemade chocolate is also equally delicious as the ice cream.  The glass cases of different assortments of chocolate, including a sugar-free collection line the right side of the wall as soon as you walk in.  I personally don’t leave without getting a couple of caramel covered chocolates to take home with me.

If you are looking to reminisce of one of your favorite television series or if you’re just in the mood for an excellent ice cream sundae, Holsten’s is the right choice.

Next time you’re there, if you so happen to see someone singing “Don’t stop believing….” and eating a Duster sundae make sure to say hi!
